SHAG stands for Stone House Art Gallery, and is an artist run project space located in a repurposed garage in Charlotte, North Carolina. The intent of SHAG is to allow emerging artists the opportunity to show their work in a gallery setting with the freedom to direct the content and curation of their exhibitions. Artists from an array of backgrounds and disciplines are able to generate spatial conversations with their work that they otherwise would not have the opportunity to do, due to lack of exhibition space.

The objective of SHAG is to expand the breadth and awareness of contemporary art in the Charlotte area and beyond via exposure through the SHAG platform. Through this network of connectivity artists are rewarded with exposure and professional growth, and likewise the audience is rewarded with stimulating new artwork. SHAG promotes the re-imagining of domestic space as a method for generating self-driven curatorial practices. Additionally, the gallery seeks to facilitate dialogue about the state of contemporary art in relationship to global art concerns and DIY culture. SHAG embodies the possibilities for reusable space through use of curatorial vernacular, while promoting viewer and artist engagement in the age of digital encounters.

The space that SHAG occupies is a freestanding building located on six acres at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Price, who have owned the property since 1986. Each original building on the property is made from quartz rocks that are said to have come from all fifty states. Located on Hwy 27, which stretches 198 miles across the state, the house has been commonly referred to in the area as “The Stone House” for generations. Thus is the name SHAG-- Stone House Art Gallery.

Kilee Price is the Founder and Co-Curator at SHAG. Prior to permanently moving back to Charlotte in 2018, Kilee has worked at The Mint Museum, The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, and The Cranbrook Art Museum. She is a working artist whose work has been published in New American Paintings, and is collected in Charlotte, New York, the midwest, the pacific northwest, and Canada. Kilee is a 2019 resident alumni and current Collective Member at Goodyear Arts in Charlotte.

Brock Oakley Ailes began his role as Co-Curator at SHAG in 2022.
